The Data Driving AI is Not Fit for Purpose: the OSCE's Role

  As the role of artificial intelligence ( AI ) in peacebuilding grows, so too does the need to address the fundamental biases embedded within the data that drive AI systems. Currently, over 90% of AI training datasets are sourced from Europe and North America, yet the majority of global conflicts occur outside these regions. This disparity creates a critical challenge: AI systems trained on data that reflects the Global North often fail to account for the realities of conflict in the Global South. This is particularly problematic in regions such as Africa, where traditional, community-based conflict resolution mechanisms are frequently overlooked in AI-driven peacebuilding strategies. I n an era defined by the speed of information and the complexity of worldwide narratives, media freedom has become both a lifeline for democratic accountability and a casualty of resurgent authoritarianism. Speaking at a recent key annual summit, a powerful call to action was issued by the top diplomat, the UN Undersecretary General  Olga Algayerova  (2017-23).
